Two years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping rolled out the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), calling for respect for cultural diversity and the celebration of common human values. In today’s unpredictable world, the initiative has become even more vital as anti-globalization sentiments rise.
Professor Elias Jabbour from the State University of Rio de Janeiro’s Faculty of Economic Sciences noted that China’s inclusive approach to diversity sets a shining example for the world. When some self-proclaimed "civilized" countries are moving towards restrictive policies, the GCI reminds us that embracing multiple cultures brings true strength and harmony.
During a high-level dialogue at the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties meeting in March 2023, Xi quoted an ancient Chinese proverb: "A single flower does not make spring, while one hundred flowers in full blossom bring spring to the garden." This timeless saying encapsulates the spirit of the GCI—urging countries to practice equality, mutual learning, and open dialogue to overcome cultural estrangement.
China’s commitment to nurturing intercultural communication was further highlighted when the United Nations, following a proposal by China, established June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. Chinese envoy Fu Cong explained that at a time of rising conflicts and intolerance, focused cultural exchanges are more important than ever.
A recent CGTN poll, surveying over 15,000 participants across 40 countries and regions, revealed that an overwhelming majority believe that the coexistence of diverse civilizations is key to global development, and that fostering a shared future through tolerance and cooperation is essential—especially in developing regions.
In these turbulent times, the Global Civilization Initiative stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us that our collective strength lies in our shared commitment to dialogue and cultural exchange.
