US Can’t Exit UNHRC as It’s Now an Observer State, Says UN

🌍 Big news from the United Nations! The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has clarified that the United States can’t withdraw from the council anymore because its membership officially ended on January 1, 2025. 🇺🇸➡️👀

According to UNHRC spokesperson Pascal Sim, since the US is no longer a member and has become an observer state, it doesn’t have the authority to pull out of the intergovernmental body. This move means the US is now one of the 193 UN member states that participate as observers. 📅

\"As a matter of principle, and in the spirit of multilateral dialogue that characterizes the Council, we welcome and encourage the engagement of every UN Member State – whether as a Council member or an observer – in the work of the Council and its mechanisms,\" Sim added.

But wait, there’s more! Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order officially withdrawing the US from the UNHRC. This isn't the first time the US has had a rocky relationship with the council. Back in June 2018, the US pulled out during Trump's first term. However, in February 2021, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the Biden administration would re-engage with the Council as an observer, leading to the US's return as a full member in January 2022. 🔄

The UNHRC is made up of 47 member states, with about a third of the seats up for grabs each year. Members serve three-year terms and can be re-elected once. It’s a dynamic body that plays a crucial role in promoting human rights globally. 🕊️
