Trump Temporarily Halts Tariffs on Canada & Mexico Amid Negotiations

In a surprising move, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico will be paused for a 30-day period. This pause aims to evaluate whether a final economic deal can be structured between the nations.

Trump emphasized the importance of securing the Northern Border, stating, \"Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like fentanyl.\" This commitment is crucial in the ongoing efforts to combat the influx of dangerous substances.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau echoed Trump’s sentiments on social media, saying, \"I just had a good call with President Trump,\" and noted that the \"proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.\"

Trudeau outlined Canada’s proactive measures, including a $1.3 billion border plan featuring new helicopters, advanced technology, and additional personnel to enhance coordination with American partners. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are dedicated to protecting the border.

Additionally, Canada is taking significant steps by appointing a fentanyl czar, labeling cartels as terrorists, ensuring 24/7 border surveillance, and launching a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to tackle organized crime and money laundering. Trudeau also announced a new intelligence directive backed by $200 million.

Trump expressed satisfaction with the initial outcome, highlighting the temporary halt of the tariffs as a step towards further negotiations. This decision comes after Trump’s recent executive orders imposing additional tariffs, which faced widespread opposition and retaliations from Canada.

The original tariff order included a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports and a 10% increase on energy products. In response, Canada immediately imposed a 25% tariff on $107 billion worth of American goods.

Earlier on Monday, Trump also mentioned a \"very friendly conversation\" with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, resulting in an agreement to pause the anticipated tariffs on Mexico for one month while negotiations continue.
