Joseph Aoun Elected as Lebanon’s New President After Over Two Years of Vacancy

🇱🇧 Big news from Lebanon! After more than two years without a president, Lebanon has finally chosen a new leader. Army chief Joseph Aoun was elected as the country's new president following a second round of voting by lawmakers on Thursday.

Aoun secured 99 votes in the second round of the electoral session, which was attended by all 128 members of parliament, as reported by Lebanese TV channel Al Jadeed. His victory brings an end to a prolonged period of presidential vacancy that had left the nation in political limbo.

In the first round, Aoun didn't quite reach the two-thirds majority needed, falling short of the required 86 votes. This led the parliament to take a two-hour break before proceeding to a second round, where a simple majority of 65 votes was enough for the win. 🎉

Lebanon had been without a president since October 2022, when the term of former President Michel Aoun ended. Despite sharing the same last name, Joseph Aoun and Michel Aoun are not related.

With Joseph Aoun stepping into the presidential role, many in Lebanon are hopeful for a new chapter of stability and progress. Here's to new beginnings! 🌟
