Biden Hopes Trump Reconsiders Tariffs on Mexico and Canada

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden shared some friendly advice for President-elect Donald Trump: rethink those tariffs on our neighbors! 🇺🇸🤝🇲🇽🇨🇦

Speaking to reporters in Nantucket, Massachusetts, where he's spending the holiday with family, Biden expressed concern over Trump's plan to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada. \"I hope he rethinks it. I think it's a counterproductive thing to do,\" Biden said.

He emphasized the unique geographical position of the United States: \"We're surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and two allies: Mexico and Canada. The last thing we need to do is begin to screw up those relationships.\"

Trump announced earlier this week that he intends to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico until they clamp down on drugs and migrants crossing the border. This move could potentially violate the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free-trade deal.

Meanwhile, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum commented on her recent call with Trump. She mentioned that while they didn't specifically discuss tariffs, they agreed on maintaining good relations between their nations. Sheinbaum outlined a strategy to address migrant issues before they reach the U.S. border.

Trump, on his part, stated that Sheinbaum had \"agreed to stop migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.\" 🤔

Biden, reflecting on his recent meeting with Trump at the White House, reiterated his desire for a smooth transition. \"And all the talk about what he's going to do or not do, I think there may be a little bit of internal reckoning on his part,\" he remarked.

As the U.S. prepares for a new administration, all eyes are on how these key relationships will evolve. Here's hoping for strengthened ties and mutual understanding! 🌎✌️
