In an era where the world feels both vast and connected, a group of young New Zealanders are making waves in China’s Jiangxi Province. The Jiangxi Volunteer Program is not just any exchange—it’s a cultural adventure bridging two diverse worlds.
Born out of the Bay of Plenty-Jiangxi provincial relationship, this program offers Kiwi youths an all-expenses-paid journey to southeast China. 🌏✈️ Amid the disruptions caused by COVID-19, organizers felt the need to reignite the connection between the two regions. Simon Appleton, the program’s organizer, shared, “There was concern that without some action, we might lose that connection. So, we thought, why not create something that would not only bring the two peoples back together but also give young Kiwis a chance to experience China in a way they might never get otherwise?”
The volunteers dive into local schools, assisting in English classes and focusing on conversational skills. But it’s not just about teaching—it’s about immersing themselves in a new culture. 🌟 Zarius, one of the volunteers, exclaimed, “I applied for the Jiangxi Volunteer Program because I knew it would be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience another culture, a way of life, and it would be a push start for me on my traveling journey.”
Summer, another enthusiastic volunteer, noticed the students’ keen interest. “It's been amazing to see how interested they are in our culture. The students have been asking so many questions about New Zealand, and it feels great to share our traditions with them.” ☺️ The exchange isn't one-sided; the volunteers are soaking up Chinese traditions, too.
Perhaps the most heartwarming moments come from shared experiences. Manaia reminisced, “I have already performed a traditional poi dance in front of a class, and they loved it. This turned into a beautiful exchange of culture where students got up and showed me their traditional dance.” 🎶🕺
