In a call for peace that resonates across borders, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, emphasized that open dialogue and consultations are the \"only correct choice\" to resolve the ongoing Yemen crisis.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, Geng highlighted the importance of respecting international law. He urged the Houthis to ensure the safety of all merchant ships navigating the Red Sea, a crucial passage for global trade.
\"Continued tensions in the Red Sea don't serve anyone's interests,\" Geng asserted. He appealed to all parties to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate the situation.
Touching on the broader regional concerns, Geng expressed China's stance on the situations in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the ongoing strikes between Houthi forces and Israel. \"Cooling down the situation and preventing the conflict from expanding is our top priority,\" he stated.
Geng called for a commitment to a political settlement driven by the Yemeni people themselves. \"We urge all parties to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation,\" he said, advocating for a Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned comprehensive political process.
He also emphasized the need for increased humanitarian aid and development assistance. \"The international community should support Yemen's efforts to improve people's livelihoods,\" Geng added.
Expressing concern over the detention of UN personnel in Yemen, Geng encouraged all parties to facilitate their unconditional release as soon as possible. \"We hope to see all UN personnel return safely,\" he concluded.
