Born at 4,500m: Xizang’s High-Altitude NICU Brings Hope

Imagine giving your first breaths at 4,500 meters above sea level… 🌄👶

In Nagqu, Xizang Autonomous Region, a brand-new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is turning the impossible into hope. This facility is now the highest-altitude NICU in the world, offering care where survival odds were once slim.

Meet little Dolma Choekyi: born at just six months gestation, weighing under 1,000 grams, in a car en route to Lhasa. In the past, her chances of making it through the night would have been very low.

Thanks to a group-style medical assistance program bringing experts from across the Chinese mainland, babies like Dolma receive world-class care right on the plateau. From high-altitude endotracheal intubation to bedside ultrasound, each advance is a lifeline. ❤️

These dedicated doctors are rewriting medical history on the Roof of the World, one fragile life at a time. 🏥✨
