Pan Qimiao Battles Illness to Win Bronze at World Fencing Champs

In a thrilling display of resilience, 15-year-old fencer Pan Qimiao lit up the FIE Junior and Cadet World Championships in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Battling a fever, Pan showed her true mettle by powering through the early rounds of the junior women’s individual sabre event.

Ranked as the Junior World No. 1, she built an impressive 3-0 lead in her semifinal bout against USA's Alexandra Lee. However, the match took an unexpected twist as Lee staged a comeback mid-bout, narrowing the gap and forcing Pan to call a tactical timeout.

Despite her determined efforts to rally, Lee surged ahead, eventually finishing the contest 15-9 and advancing to the final. Neutral athlete Aleksandra Mikjailova then clinched the gold medal with a dominant 15-3 victory over Lee.

The championships also featured a competitive junior men’s individual sabre event, where China's Cui Zhanshuo recorded the best result among four participants with a 13th-place finish, while Italy's Cosimo Bertini took home the title.

Pan Qimiao’s performance, full of grit and inspiring determination, is a reminder of the passion and unpredictability that make competitive sports so electrifying. ⚔️✨
