Prostate cancer, often dubbed the "retirement disease," is rapidly emerging as a major health challenge, especially among men 50 and older. Recent trends in the Chinese mainland show rising numbers, as indicated by the Chinese mainland Cancer Burden Report and hospital screenings in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Zhejiang, and Guangzhou.
In an effort to tackle this challenge head-on, the Beijing Society of Integrative Medicine launched a Prostate Cancer Patient Health Education Project. This initiative combines online webinars and in-person sessions to ensure that men grasp the importance of early detection through simple steps like the PSA test. During National Cancer Week from April 15 to 21, the Urology Department at Beijing Hospital also organized an engaging offline event to educate patients about the disease and its treatment options.
Liu Ming, Director of the Urology Department at Beijing Hospital, stressed, "Even though prostate cancer often starts silently, early detection through PSA screening is a crucial step in saving lives." He pointed out that while the PSA test is an affordable and effective screening tool, a significant number of older men hesitate to use it due to a lack of awareness.
Data from the Chinese mainland reveal that among men over 60, the detection rate for prostate cancer ranges between 0.8% and 1.5%. Alarmingly, 20% to 30% of patients already have metastatic disease when first diagnosed, and the five-year survival rate for these cases remains below 50%. Experts now propose a refined screening approach: start with the PSA test, proceed with a pelvic MRI if results are abnormal, and reserve biopsy for persistent suspicions. This method helps reduce overdiagnosis and prevent unnecessary treatments.
For tech-savvy young men and everyone invested in a healthy future, experts are urging those aged 50 and above to incorporate regular PSA testing into their routine checkups. It’s a small step with potentially life-changing benefits. Stay informed, take charge of your health, and spread the word! 💪🔍
