California Schools Say 📵 to Smartphones: New Law Targets Student Wellbeing

Hey there! 📣 Big news from the Golden State! California is hitting the pause button on smartphones in schools. 📱🚫 Governor Gavin Newsom just signed a law that means schools will have to limit or even ban smartphone use. Why? It's all about boosting mental health and helping students focus on what's important. 🧠✨

Starting by July 1, 2026, schools across California will need to roll out new policies to cut down on screen time. That's a huge deal for nearly 5.9 million public school students! 🎒 This move comes after 13 other states made similar changes, following Florida's lead in keeping phones out of classrooms.

Los Angeles County is already ahead of the game, having banned smartphones for its 429,000 students back in June. 🌴 It seems like everyone's recognizing that too much screen time can be a real bummer for mental health.

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy is on board, too. He’s pushing for warning labels on social media, calling it a mental health emergency. 🚨 A study he mentioned found that teens spending over three hours a day on social media face higher risks of anxiety and depression. Yikes! 😰

Governor Newsom hopes this law will help students stay present and connect more with the world around them. 🌎 He said that putting the phones away can help reduce anxiety and let students focus on learning and making friends. Sounds like a win-win! 🎉

What do you think about this new law? Could you survive school without your smartphone? 🤔 Let us know in the comments!
