Good news for aspiring parents! 🍼 Shanghai is stepping up to support families by including 12 assisted reproductive medical services in its health insurance coverage. Starting June 1, procedures like egg retrieval, sperm retrieval, artificial insemination, embryo culture, and embryo transfer will be part of the healthcare plan. This move aims to encourage an increase in the Chinese mainland's birth rate.
According to a recent circular from Shanghai's Healthcare Security Bureau, Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, and Health Commission, expenses related to these services will now be covered. So far, 17 out of the 20 medical institutions offering assisted reproductive services in Shanghai are part of this initiative.
“This inclusion covers the majority of assisted reproductive technologies, effectively easing financial and emotional stress for patients and their families,” said Zhang Ting, a doctor at the reproductive medicine department of Renji Hospital.
For example, healthcare insurance will now cover 70% of the egg retrieval cost, which is about 2,500 yuan (approximately $352) per procedure. Each patient is eligible for coverage up to three times at a single medical institution, making these services more accessible than ever.
This progressive step not only alleviates the economic burden on families but also brings hope to many who dream of parenthood. 🌟 It's a significant stride towards supporting young families and boosting the nation's birth rate.
