Intel Launches Weaker AI Chips for Chinese Mainland to Comply with U.S. Sanctions

💻 Intel is stepping up its game! To navigate U.S. export controls, the tech giant is launching two new AI chips—HL-328 and HL-388—specifically designed for the Chinese mainland. Although these chips pack less power, they're set to make waves when they drop in June and September respectively. 🚀

But Intel isn't alone in this race. 🏁 Rival company Nvidia is also gearing up with three China-specific chips after the U.S. tightened rules on AI chip capabilities destined for China last year. One of their stars, the H20, is expected to hit the scene in early 2024. 📅

Intel's new chips are based on their latest Gaudi 3 product line, unveiled on April 9. Despite sharing cool features like on-chip memory and high-bandwidth memory, these chips will have reduced performance to comply with the regulations. 🔒

\"If companies don't offer their top-notch products to international customers, they're bound to lose them,\" says Zeng Yi, a professor of AI at the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. \"China needs to build its own AI ecosystems ASAP!\" 🌐

Intel faces some hurdles, including lagging manufacturing tech and stiff competition from AMD and Nvidia. With the Chinese mainland accounting for a whopping 27% of Intel's revenue in 2023, the stakes are high! 🎲
