Porto Icon Jorge Costa Passes Away at 53

When the news broke that FC Porto’s own Jorge Costa had passed away at just 53, the football world stood still 😢. The legendary defender suffered a cardiac arrest at Porto’s training centre and, despite rushing him to the hospital, could not be revived.

Known as “Bicho” by fans, Costa was more than a towering centre-back; he was a leader on and off the pitch. During his stellar career, he featured in 530 official matches—383 of them for Porto—and earned 50 caps for the Portugal national team.

As captain, he lifted the UEFA Cup in 2003 and famously hoisted the Champions League trophy in 2004 under Jose Mourinho, sparking one of the club’s greatest triumphs 🏆. He was also one of six players to secure five straight Portuguese League titles with Porto alongside stars like Aloisio and Paulinho Santos.

In April 2024, Costa came back to the club he loved as Director of Professional Football under president Andre Villas-Boas, aiming to shape the next generation of talent. His sudden passing leaves a void at Porto and in the hearts of football fans worldwide.

Rest in peace, Jorge Costa. Your passion, spirit, and leadership will live on in Dragon Nation ❤️🐉.
