LA28 Olympics Adds 22 Medal Events and Sets a New Equality Standard

Exciting news for sports fans and young enthusiasts! The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are turning up the heat by adding 22 brand new medal events compared to Paris 2024. With a total of 351 medal events and an athlete quota of 10,500, LA28 is gearing up to deliver more action than ever before. 🏅

A historic milestone unfolds as every team sport will now field an equal number of women’s and men’s teams – a first for the Olympics. In the initial lineup, there will be 5,333 female athletes and 5,167 male athletes, underscoring a strong commitment to gender equality.

The LA28 Organizing Committee isn’t stopping there. They have allocated an extra 698 quota places for sports such as baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash – opening new doors for athletes ready to make their mark. Mixed events also receive an upgrade in sports like archery, athletics (4x100m mixed relay), golf, gymnastics, coastal beach sprint rowing, and table tennis.

Other exciting changes include debut events in swimming, rowing, and an expansion in basketball 3×3, which now welcomes 12 teams per gender instead of eight. Sport climbing is also stepping into the spotlight with its boulder and lead events being contested separately. Boxing, having already been approved for inclusion in March 2025, rounds out a diverse program featuring 31 sports.

This refreshed and inclusive LA28 program not only promises cutting-edge athletic competition but also embodies a modern, forward-thinking spirit that resonates with young professionals, students, and sports enthusiasts around the globe. Game on!
