Milano Kicks Off One-Year Countdown to 2026 Winter Paralympics ❄️🏅

🎉 Milan was buzzing with excitement on Wednesday as the city celebrated the one-year countdown to the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Paralympic Games. IPC President Andrew Parsons shared his enthusiasm, saying the upcoming event is set to be "the most beautiful Paralympic Winter Games yet" and is sure to captivate audiences worldwide.

The Games are scheduled to take place from March 6 to 15, 2026, featuring around 665 athletes from 50 countries and regions competing in six thrilling sports. With 79 gold medals up for grabs, fans can look forward to a spectacular showcase of talent. The historic Arena di Verona will host the opening ceremony, while the Ice Stadium in Cortina d'Ampezzo will light up the closing ceremony.

Competition venues span across northern Italy, including Para ice hockey in Milan, Para biathlon and Para cross-country skiing in the picturesque Val di Fiemme, and Para alpine skiing, Para snowboard, and wheelchair curling in Cortina d'Ampezzo, nestled in the heart of the Dolomites.

As part of the celebration, ticket sales kicked off with a 24-hour pre-sale exclusively for Visa cardholders, followed by public sales on Thursday. The organizing committee ensured accessibility with over 89% of tickets priced at 35 euros (about $37.85) or less, and children's tickets starting at just 10 euros (about $10.81). More than 200,000 affordable tickets are available, making the Games accessible to more fans.

"Milano-Cortina 2026 will be more than just a sports competition, and it will serve as a catalyst for social change and inclusivity," Parsons stated. "From the tactical precision of wheelchair curling to the speed and endurance of Para cross-country skiing, every sport will showcase the resilience and determination of Paralympic athletes."

The Paralympic torch relay will light up the nation over 11 days, covering 2,000 kilometers with 501 torchbearers. Organizers emphasized that the relay aims to promote inclusivity and unity worldwide, marking the countdown to the Games with pride and passion.
