Carlos Alcaraz is on fire! 🔥 The 21-year-old Spanish sensation powered through to the third round of the Paris Masters, defeating Chile's Nicolas Jarry 7-5, 6-1.
It wasn't all smooth sailing for Alcaraz, though. Jarry's fierce forehand gave him some trouble, even breaking Alcaraz's serve to level at 5-5 in the first set. But a double fault from Jarry handed the set to the Spaniard.
\"It was a little bit complicated, really happy to get through the first set,\" Alcaraz admitted. \"I have to get used to the speed of the court. It's really fast for me.\"
Once he found his rhythm, there was no stopping Alcaraz. He saved a critical break point in the second set with an ace 🎯 and stormed ahead to a 4-1 lead.
Serving for the match, Alcaraz saved another break point with an ace and sealed the victory when Jarry's backhand clipped the net and went out.
\"He's a really dangerous player on these courts,\" Alcaraz said about his opponent. \"I'm super happy to win here. It's been a great year so far.\"
Meanwhile, it was a tough day for some of the tournament's top seeds.
Seventh-seeded Casper Ruud from Norway faced an upset, losing to Australia's Jordan Thompson 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4.
But perhaps the most dramatic moment came from Russia's Andrey Rublev. Seeded sixth, Rublev lost two tight tiebreakers to Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo, 7-6(6), 7-6(5). Frustration got the better of him, and he smashed his racket against his knee seven times 😱, even making it bleed.
Top seed Jannik Sinner of Italy withdrew from the tournament due to a virus 🤒.
\"I'm very disappointed to tell you that I am not able to play here at this tournament,\" Sinner shared. \"I came here very early to prepare and then I felt sick. I have a virus at the moment, which will pass in the next two or three days. Body-wise, I am not ready to compete.\"
With big names exiting early, the Paris Masters is heating up, and anything can happen! Stay tuned for more thrilling tennis action 🎾🔥.
