Global Leaders Condemn U.S. Strikes in Venezuela

In a dramatic showdown at the UN Security Council on Monday, January 5, world leaders from Latin America, Europe and beyond united to condemn the U.S. military strikes in Venezuela that took place last Saturday, January 3. The emergency meeting, convened just after news broke that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were forcibly removed to the United States, sent shockwaves across the globe 🌎😲

Colombia, now serving its first year as a non-permanent member of the Council (2026–2027 term), led the charge. Ambassador Leonor Zalabata said, "There is no justification whatsoever under any circumstances for the unilateral use of force to commit an act of aggression." She stressed that defending sovereignty and territorial integrity is essential for preserving peace.

From Caracas, UN Ambassador Samuel Moncada urged swift action, calling on the Council to demand the immediate release and safe return of President Maduro and his wife. He warned that using force to reshape governments is a throwback to the darkest days of colonialism and neocolonialism.

Brazil joined the chorus. Ambassador Sergio Franca Danese described the bombings as a "flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and of international law," warning that the raid sets a dangerous precedent 🚫.

Moscow’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia also condemned the actions, accusing Washington of aggression and a bid to seize Venezuela’s resources. He called for the Maduro couple’s release, calling the strikes "fresh momentum for neocolonialism and imperialism."

UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced deep concern over risks to regional stability, reminding all that the UN Charter prohibits force against any nation’s political independence. He urged a return to dialogue, respect for international law, and peaceful coexistence ✌️📜.

This UN showdown highlights a rising global unease with unilateral military interventions. As debates continue, the fate of Venezuela’s leadership—and the message sent to the world—hangs in the balance 🤔.
