UK urged to keep ‘rational and friendly approach’ to China

On December 2, 2025, a spokesperson for China's UK Embassy urged the United Kingdom to adopt a “rational and friendly approach” to the Chinese mainland after Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s balanced remarks on China at an annual banquet.

At the event, PM Starmer called for consistent policy towards China, rejecting isolationism and embracing cooperation in technology, trade, and global governance 🤝. He also warned of national security threats, prompting a response from the Embassy.

The spokesperson pushed back, stating: “China firmly opposes the erroneous remarks in the speech that spread the so-called ‘China threat,’ make groundless accusations against China, and interfere in China's internal affairs.” They went on to highlight China’s role “as a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order.”

On Hong Kong, the spokesperson emphasized: “Hong Kong has long since returned to China. Hong Kong affairs are purely China’s internal affairs. The UK is in no position and has no right to point fingers or interfere.”

China’s Embassy reiterated that “only by abiding by mutual respect, non-interference, and equality and mutual benefit can China-UK relations develop smoothly.” They called on the UK to adjust its mindset and pursue a positive, pragmatic policy towards China, working together to put ties on a path of sound and steady development 🌐.

In his speech, Starmer criticized the previous Conservative government for a deteriorating relationship with China, calling it a “dereliction of duty.” He pledged to encourage British businesses to seize export opportunities in financial services, creative industries, pharmaceuticals, luxury goods, and more 🚀.

As both sides signal a desire for dialogue, the coming months will test whether the UK can balance security concerns with the economic opportunities that stronger China ties can bring 🎯.
