China Calls for Calm Amid Houthi-Israel Clashes

At Monday's UN Security Council session, China's Deputy Permanent Representative Geng Shuang made a clear call: dial down the heat in the Red Sea. 🌊

He warned that the recent surge in Houthi-Israel attacks is pushing the region closer to the brink. He stressed the importance of respecting Yemen's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and called on Yemen's Houthi forces and Israel to rethink their moves 🤔 and ensure safe passage for commercial vessels under international law.

Geng emphasized that the real win comes from dialogue, not force. 🗣️ He urged all parties to get back to the negotiating table, bridge gaps, and fast-track reconciliation—key steps to rebuild Yemen's economy and renew hope for millions affected by the conflict.

On the humanitarian front, China highlighted Yemen's dire food shortages 🆘 and urged the international community to ramp up emergency aid. Geng also condemned the detention of over 20 UN staff by the Houthi forces as "utterly unacceptable", demanding their immediate and unconditional release.

Looking at the bigger picture, Geng linked the Red Sea tensions to the broader Middle East crisis, including the nearly two-year-long Gaza conflict and its devastating human cost. He called on the UN Security Council to help end hostilities, ease the humanitarian crisis, and lay the groundwork for lasting peace.

China's message is simple: calm, cooperation, and compassion are the keys to charting a safer course for Yemen and the entire region. 🤝
