Trump Revives ‘Department of War’ Title for Pentagon Shakeup

In a move that sounds straight out of a history textbook, President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order to bring back the "Department of War" name for the Pentagon. 😲

Under the order, the Department of Defense, the secretary of defense and their deputies can now use secondary titles such as "Department of War," "Secretary of War" and "Deputy Secretary of War" in official docs and public statements, according to the White House.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has been told to propose steps222legislative or executive222to make the renaming permanent. But a full change still needs Congress to give the green light. 🏛️

“Defense is too defensive,” Trump said last month in the Oval Office. “We want to be defensive, but we want to be offensive too if we have to be. So, it just sounded to me like a better name.”

Hegseth insists it’s more than just semantics—it’s about boosting a “warrior ethos.” Critics, however, warn it could rack up big costs and distract from actual security threats. 💰⚠️

Senator Andy Kim slammed the idea as “childish,” saying Americans prefer to avoid wars rather than hype them, according to the BBC.

The original Department of War was born in 1789 to oversee the U.S. Army and led military efforts through both World Wars until it merged into the Department of Defense in the late 1940s. 📜

Whether this name swap marks a real strategic shift or just a flashy rebrand is now up to lawmakers—and the American public—to decide. 🗳️
