EU Threatens $84B Tariff on U.S. Goods if Talks Fail

Brussels is buzzing with trade tension! The European Commission announced on Monday a new list of U.S. goods worth €72 billion (about $84 billion) that could be hit with tariffs if negotiations with Washington don't reach a breakthrough. Commissioner Maros Sefcovic revealed the plan during a meeting with EU ministers, emphasizing that the bloc is preparing for all outcomes.

The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump threw lengthy negotiations off track by threatening a 30% tariff on EU exports if no deal is reached by August 1. Despite the high stakes, EU trade ministers remain determined to secure an agreement and avoid a damaging trade war. Meanwhile, Denmark's foreign minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, stated there is a unified commitment among the ministers to be ready to respond if talks collapse, calling the U.S. threat "absolutely unacceptable and unjustified."

Adding to the tension, the EU has also drawn up a separate list targeting U.S. imports worth €21 billion related to earlier tariffs on steel and aluminum. Although this list is not in immediate effect, the EU is clearly gearing up to counter any further aggressive moves. It might be a bumpy road ahead, but the EU is ready to act if needed! 🚀
