China Offers Condolences Over Pope Francis’s Passing

In a heartfelt statement this week, China expressed condolences over the passing of Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church who left us at age 88. 😔

At a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun confirmed that China is committed to further enhancing constructive engagement with the Vatican. He stated, "China stands ready to work with the Vatican for continued improvement of China-Vatican ties."

When asked about the so-called "ties with Taiwan," Guo underscored that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory and reiterated that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal representative of the entire nation. He added, "More and more countries have come to recognize and abide by the one-China principle. We hope relevant countries will see where the arc of history bends and come back to the right path of upholding the one-China principle."

This news reminds us that history and global dialogue often intersect in unexpected ways, bridging cultural and political divides. 🕊️
