Ex-President Umalá Gets 15-Year Sentence Over Money Laundering

In a dramatic courtroom twist in Lima, former President Umalá and his wife, Erediá, have been hit with 15-year prison sentences for money laundering charges. The Peruvian High Court revealed that during the 2011 presidential campaign, the couple concealed substantial funds provided by Brazil’s largest construction firm, Odebrecht, which were later used to purchase real estate. ⚖️

Adding to the fallout, Erediá’s brother, Ilan, received a 12-year sentence. The ruling, which takes effect immediately, requires Umalá to be transferred to a prison in Lima while he maintains the right to appeal under Peruvian law.

This landmark verdict highlights Peru’s ongoing crackdown on corruption and financial misconduct in political circles, reminding everyone that accountability is key—even at the highest levels. 😮
