S. Korea Parliament Moves to Impeach Ex-Acting President Choi

In a dramatic twist, South Korea's parliament has reported an impeachment motion against former acting President Choi Sang-mok. Citing his refusal to appoint a constitutional court justice during his short tenure, the move has sparked heated debate on the political stage. ⚖️

The impeachment motion was submitted by the main opposition Democratic Party along with four minor parties on March 21. Choi, who also held the role of deputy prime minister for economic affairs, served as acting president for about three months until Han Duck-soo returned to power.

One of the main charges involves Choi's alleged connection to the controversial emergency martial law declared by President Yoon Suk-yeol on December 3 last year, which was swiftly revoked by the opposition-led National Assembly. This decision led to impeachment proceedings against both President Yoon and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo last December.

Adding to the complexity, the constitutional court, currently with eight justices while one seat remains unfilled, is set to decide on Yoon's impeachment on Friday. As tensions rise, all eyes remain on South Korea's dynamic political landscape.
