China Boosts Fight Against Telecom Fraud with 54% Surge in Prosecutions

China's national lawmakers are taking significant steps to combat telecom fraud, with the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) presenting a robust work report.

Procurator-General Ying Yong delivered the report during the second plenary meeting of the third session of the 14th National People's Congress, highlighting a remarkable 53.9% increase in prosecutions related to telecom fraud in 2024. A total of 78,000 individuals were prosecuted, showcasing China's intensified crackdown on these cybercrimes.

The SPP has teamed up with the top court and police authorities to create comprehensive guidelines for tackling cross-border telecom fraud. This collaboration is crucial in addressing the sophisticated methods employed by criminal groups operating beyond China's borders.

One notable case involved Zhejiang prosecutors addressing a scheme orchestrated by a Myanmar-based criminal group targeting Chinese nationals. The coordinated efforts between different regions and international actors demonstrate China's commitment to safeguarding its citizens from sophisticated fraud operations.

As digital threats evolve, China's proactive measures aim to create a safer online environment for everyone.
