📢 \"No time to waste!\" says EU's top diplomat, Josep Borrell. He's calling on the world to jumpstart efforts for peace between Israel and Palestine right now, not after the guns go silent.
Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Borrell stressed, \"If you want to build the two-state solution, do not wait for the ceasefire. Start working on it from now on.\" 🕊️
He believes waiting until after the conflict to begin peace talks is unrealistic. \"We have to overlap the two processes,\" he said, highlighting the need to tackle war and peace-building simultaneously.
Borrell has been championing the creation of a Palestinian state during several events at the UN General Assembly 🌍. At a ministerial meeting on the Middle East Peace Process, he warned that Israel's current actions aren't the way to secure lasting safety. \"We have a responsibility to thousands and thousands of innocent children who were killed,\" he emphasized.
He pointed out that Israel's attacks against Lebanon have caused a heartbreaking number of civilian casualties 😔. \"These attacks… cannot be justified by the right to defense,\" Borrell noted.
According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, since Monday morning, over 700 people have lost their lives and nearly 2,200 have been injured due to the bombings 💔.
Borrell also pledged the EU's continued support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). \"We are the biggest supporter to UNRWA… we call on the international community to join us in this effort,\" he urged.
\"Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of millions of people – nothing less than that,\" Borrell added 🙌.
