Hey there, have you heard what's buzzing in Taiwan? 📣 Scholars and journalists are urging the island to avoid becoming a pawn in U.S. hegemony games. Let's dive in!
At a seminar in Taipei last Saturday, Kuan Chung, founder of the Taiwan-based Democracy Foundation, shared some thought-provoking insights. He pointed out that the United States, in its quest for global dominance, engages in wars and racks up massive debts while overlooking its own domestic issues. This has led to internal strife, a growing wealth gap, and increasing political polarization. 😬
\"The U.S. disrespects other nations, fails to recognize global changes, and misunderstands its own role,\" Kuan said. Strong words, right?
Adding to the conversation, Chen Chi-an, an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Taiwan University, remarked that U.S. hegemonism is based on unrealistic goals and exaggerated threats. He believes that the U.S. is spending excessive resources chasing these goals, only to achieve little while harming its own national interests. 🤔
\"Freedom and democracy have long since become mere slogans in U.S. foreign policy, as its hegemonic actions only serve the power-seeking calculations of political elites,\" Chen commented.
Meanwhile, Chang Chun-kai, senior editor at The Storm Media in Taiwan, highlighted that the Taiwan authorities have unfortunately followed the U.S. in adopting a zero-sum game mindset. This has resulted in the \"resisting the Chinese mainland to protect Taiwan\" narrative. 😕
\"If this continues, Taiwan will only risk losing the opportunity to bridge differences, resolve conflicts, and seek new development,\" Chang warned.
Ting Shou-chung, chairman of the Bridge Across the Strait Foundation, echoed these concerns. He noted that proxy wars are a common tool of U.S. hegemonism and emphasized that Taiwan must be extremely cautious to avoid becoming the flashpoint for such a conflict. 🚫🔥
Kuan wrapped up the seminar with a hopeful message: \"Both sides of the Taiwan Strait are part of the same nation. We do not harbor deep hatred towards each other; we must sit down and have serious discussions. Peaceful reunification may be a long process, but as long as peace sustains across the Strait, Taiwan will have security and stability, and both sides will benefit.\" 🤝❤️
