China has signaled its readiness to continue working towards restoring stability in Haiti, according to Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). Lin's statement came on Tuesday in response to questions about China's support for a recent United Nations Security Council resolution.
Despite Haiti not yet establishing diplomatic relations with China, Beijing voted in favor of Resolution 2743, which extends the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) for another year. The resolution was unanimously passed by the UN Security Council on July 12.
\"As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has long approached the issue of Haiti with a responsible and constructive attitude,\" Lin remarked. \"We, alongside the international community, recently supported the adoption of Resolution 2743, sending a positive signal of continued support for the people of Haiti.\"
Following the resolution's passage, Haiti expressed gratitude to China and acknowledged the constructive role it has played. \"The country is ready to maintain contact and communication with China,\" Lin added.
Lin emphasized China's willingness to keep working towards restoring stability in Haiti and supporting the Haitian people in finding a \"Haitian-led and Haitian-owned solution.\"
The unanimously adopted resolution calls on all Haitian stakeholders to urgently establish a provisional electoral council and agree on a sustainable, time-bound roadmap for elections. It also requests BINUH to develop a strategy to support a Haitian-led political process and to update the council in its quarterly reports.
Established in 2019, BINUH is a special political mission tasked with advising the Haitian government on promoting political stability, good governance, and advancing human rights.
