China has slammed the U.S. for what it says is a persistent disinformation campaign on social media platforms. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian didn't hold back during a press briefing on Monday, expressing strong opposition to the alleged actions of the U.S. government.
According to a Reuters report from June 14, the Pentagon orchestrated a secret online campaign to discredit China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using fake internet accounts and social media posts, the campaign allegedly sowed doubt about the safety and efficacy of China's CoronaVac vaccine. A senior U.S. military officer was quoted saying, \"We didn't do a good job sharing vaccines with partners, so what was left to us was to throw shade on China's.\"
Lin Jian pointed out that these remarks reveal the true intentions behind the U.S.'s disinformation efforts. \"When the U.S. wants to contain and suppress a country, it chooses to ignore the facts and truth, launching smears and vilification through 'coordination',\" he said.
He added that this isn't just about vaccines. China believes the U.S. has been spreading false narratives about initiatives like the Belt and Road and creating myths about \"overcapacity\" in China's booming new energy vehicle industry. 🚗⚡
\"Such practices by no means show the U.S.'s 'power' and only reveal its obsession with supremacy and hypocrisy,\" Lin said. \"The international community needs to be clear-eyed about this.\"
Lin called on the U.S. to step up and act responsibly. \"A big country should behave in a manner befitting its status,\" he emphasized. \"We hope that the U.S. will right its mindset, shoulder its due responsibilities as a major country, and stop propagating disinformation against other countries.\"
Seems like tensions are heating up! 🌡️ What's your take on this international exchange?
