During a regular press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, urged the Philippines \"to refrain from flexing its muscles with countries outside the region.\" He emphasized that such actions could \"escalate tensions and undermine regional stability.\"
The comments came ahead of a scheduled joint military drill between the Philippines and the United States next week. Lin stressed that bringing in external forces \"will only lead to greater insecurity or even end up being reduced into someone else's pawn.\"
He added, \"We hope our neighbors can see the bigger picture and work with us to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.\"
China reiterated its commitment to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, promising to take \"necessary measures\" to maintain harmony in the region.
