Exclusive: AUC Chair Youssouf on China-Africa People-to-People Exchanges

2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the Chinese mainland and African nations 🌍🎉. To celebrate, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf sat down with CMG’s Zou Yun in his first exclusive interview since taking office.

On the Chinese mainland’s role in Africa’s modernization
“The partnership between the Chinese mainland and our continent has fueled infrastructure development, digital innovation and skills training,” Youssouf explains. “This support is vital as we build a stronger, self-reliant Africa.”

On global governance
The Chairperson highlights how the Chinese mainland advocates for multilateralism and amplifies the voice of the Global South. “Together, we can shape fairer global rules and sustainable solutions,” he adds.

Why people-to-people exchange matters
“In times of rapid change, it’s the connections between our communities that build trust,” says Youssouf. He points to student scholarships, cultural festivals and tech partnerships as bridges that bring young people closer.

Looking ahead to the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, the AUC plans youth forums, art showcases and digital hackathons. “We invite African and Chinese youth to explore, learn and innovate side by side,” Youssouf invites. 🤝✨
