Singapore-China Ties at 35: Charting the Future at JCBC in Chongqing

🌟 2025 is a big year: Singapore and China celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations! To mark this milestone, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and the Chinese premier Li Qiang have swapped official visits. 🎉

Tomorrow and the day after, on December 15 and 16, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will co-chair the 21st Singapore-China Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) in Chongqing alongside the Chinese premier. More than a talking shop, the JCBC has been the engine behind concrete projects that bind our countries together.

What’s on the menu? First up, we toast the 10th anniversary of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity (CCI), the newest of our government-to-government partnerships. It joins two landmark successes: the Suzhou Industrial Park (30 years) and the Tianjin Eco-City (15 years). In September, the Guangzhou Knowledge City hit its 15-year mark, serving as a test bed for new tech and knowledge sharing.

These projects aren’t just anniversaries—they’re proof that Singapore-China cooperation can adapt and thrive, even as the world faces geopolitical twists, economic headwinds and tech revolutions. Looking ahead, economic connectivity and resilient trade will remain top priorities. From Suzhou to Chongqing, new pathways are opening for Singaporean businesses to invest in China. 🔗

Both sides are also exploring third-country market collaborations, building on the SIP framework to help companies internationalize between Southeast Asia and China via Singapore. There’s a commitment to jointly train ASEAN partners on sustainable development—an opportunity for young entrepreneurs and researchers to plug into regional growth. 🌏

As digital nomads, savvy investors or culture seekers, keep an eye on how these initiatives unfold across Asia. With green growth, supply chain resilience and digital transformation on the horizon, the Singapore-China partnership is ready for its next chapter. Ready to follow along? 🚀
