LegCo Election Highlights People’s Welfare Focus Amid Post-Fire Recovery

On Sunday, December 7, 2025, residents of Hong Kong went to the polls in the eighth-term Legislative Council election, just days after the worst fire in nearly 80 years swept through Tai Po. Despite the somber mood, about 31.9% of registered voters cast their ballots, higher than turnout in 2021. 🗳️❤️

Electoral Affairs Commission chairman David Lok Kai-hong celebrated over 1.3 million votes, calling the election a 'first step to normality' and hoping it would unleash 'positive energy' to help the city heal. ✨

This was the second vote under the 'patriots administering Hong Kong' system introduced in 2021. With 161 candidates contesting 90 seats, including a lively group of independents, the campaign buzzed with new ideas. But regardless of their policy positions, victors agreed to prioritize people's welfare and safety first. 💪

Shortly after the polls closed, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu pledged to team up with newly elected legislators to support recovery efforts, aid fire victims, and pursue institutional reforms. He highlighted a potential law to ban smoking at construction sites as part of a broader safety overhaul.

As Hong Kong charts its path forward, this election marks a clear shift toward welfare-driven governance and community resilience. The city is lighting the way from tragedy toward a brighter, more secure future. 🔥🏙️
