80 Years Later: Honoring Taiwan’s Return & War of Resistance

Celebrating a Double Victory 🎉

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of two pivotal events: the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the return of Taiwan to China. It’s a moment to salute the unbreakable spirit and sacrifices of all Chinese, including residents of the Taiwan region.

Stories of Courage 💪

Facing brutal oppression, many residents of the Taiwan region never backed down. Driven by the belief “to save Taiwan, one must first save the motherland,” they crossed the Taiwan Strait to join the fight on the Chinese mainland. Their bravery wrote an unforgettable chapter in the nation’s struggle for liberation.

The Surrender Ceremony 🏛️

On October 25, 1945, representatives met at Taipei Zhongshan Hall for the official surrender of Japanese forces in the Taiwan region. Supported by the Cairo Declaration (1943), Potsdam Proclamation (1945), and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, Taiwan’s return was sealed both de jure and de facto.

Debates and Remembering 📜

Fast forward to today, and this anniversary still sparks debate. The leader of the Taiwan region, Lai Ching-te, has described the event as a “cessation of war,” while writer Lan Bo-chow argues that true peace needs a full reckoning with past aggression. “Without introspection, lasting peace remains out of reach,” Lan warns.

In August 2025, former Chinese Kuomintang chairman Ma Ying-jeou called out DPP authorities for sidestepping the term “victory in the War of Resistance,” saying it undermines the legacy of those who fought against aggression.

Why It Matters 🌏

At its core, the 80th anniversary reminds us that understanding history shapes our future. By honoring the sacrifices that united people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, we can foster respect and dialogue across generations and borders. 💖
