Nice Ocean Action Plan Ignites Wave of Marine Protection

The global tide turned in Nice as the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) wrapped up with a bold move: the launch of the Nice Ocean Action Plan. Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, the event gathered heads of state, policymakers, academics and young innovators, all united for a safer, cleaner ocean. 🌊

The plan features a declaration titled "Our Ocean, Our Future: United for Urgent Action," outlining concrete goals such as expanding marine protected areas, decarbonizing maritime transport, combating marine pollution, and mobilizing financing for vulnerable coastal and island nations.

A major highlight was the boost for the Agreement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea on marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions (BBNJ Agreement). With 19 additional countries ratifying the deal, the push to bring it into force grows ever stronger.

The conference, held from June 9 to 13, proved that when leaders, NGOs, and the private sector come together, big waves of change are possible. Looking ahead, the next UNOC in 2028 — co-hosted by South Korea and Chile — promises even more dynamic discussions on ocean governance and sustainable development.

Ready to ride the wave of change? Stay tuned and join the movement for a sustainable future! 🚀
