The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a renowned global research organization, has called on African nations to actively involve local communities in collecting data on river discharge. This initiative aims to strengthen water resource management across the continent.
IWMI highlighted that Africa's 63 transboundary rivers, vital for millions of people, are plagued by inadequate or outdated gauging stations. This shortfall severely hampers the ability to monitor water flow and assess its suitability for consumption, posing challenges for sustainable water management.
By engaging local communities in data collection, IWMI believes that more accurate and up-to-date information can be gathered. This grassroots involvement not only empowers residents but also ensures more effective monitoring and management of essential water resources.
