Greece’s Hidden Village Reappears Amid Water Crisis 🌊

Imagine seeing a village rise from underwater! 😲 That's exactly what's happening in Greece right now. The once-submerged village of Kallio is peeking above the surface as the Mornos artificial lake's water levels drop dramatically.

The Mornos lake, about 150 km northeast of Athens, has been a key water source for the capital for decades. But this summer, the lake's surface area shrank from 16.6 square kilometers last July to just 12.8 square kilometers. That's a lot less water! 💧

This isn't just a local problem. Islands across Greece are feeling the heat (literally) with water shortages becoming more common. Prolonged droughts and less rainfall and snowfall are the culprits, and they're not showing signs of stopping.

The Environment and Energy Ministry reported that in the last two years, water reserves at Mornos and other main reservoirs for Athens have dropped by about 30% to 703 million cubic meters. With half of Greece's population living in the greater Athens area, that's pretty alarming! 🚨

\\"We've had low rainfall, and especially low snowfall, during the winters of 2022-2023 and 2023-2024,\\" explained Professor Dimitrios Emmanouloudis, an expert in Mountain Water Management. Climate change much? 🌍🔥

This situation is a wake-up call for all of us. 🌱 It's time to think about how we use water and what we can do to protect our planet. After all, nobody wants to see our favorite vacation spots run dry! 🏖️
