China Makes Waves with Significant Progress in Water Ecology Protection

Hey there, water lovers! 💧 Guess what? China is making a big splash in protecting its waterways, and the results are impressive! 🚀

According to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), the proportion of surface water bodies classified as having excellent water quality reached a whopping 89.4% in 2023. That's up by 1.5 percentage points from last year and 4.4 points higher than the target set in their 14th Five-Year Plan! 🎯

Taking the mighty Yangtze River as an example, a stunning 98.5% of monitoring sites in the basin achieved excellent water quality, marking a 0.4 percentage point increase from the previous year. 🐟 But that's not all—the number of native fish species in the Yangtze River Basin jumped to 227, adding 34 new species since 2022. Plus, the count of nationally protected aquatic wildlife species rose to 14, up by three! 🐠🐢

Last June, the MEE teamed up with other departments to roll out detailed assessment criteria for water ecology in the Yangtze River Basin. The first official assessment under these new guidelines is set for 2025. 🗓️

Building on these pilot efforts in the Yangtze, China plans to fine-tune its water ecology monitoring and evaluation methods nationwide. The goal? To establish top-notch water ecology standards and support the vision of building a beautiful China. 🌍💕

It's exciting to see such strides in environmental protection! With cleaner rivers and a thriving ecosystem, the future looks bright—and not just for China, but for all of us who care about our planet's health. 🌳✨
