😢 Tragedy struck the city of Kangding in southwest China's Sichuan Province this weekend when sudden flash floods and a mudslide caused by heavy rainfall left at least 10 people dead and 17 others missing.
Early Saturday morning around 3:30 a.m. (Beijing time), residents of Kangding were caught off-guard as torrential rains triggered a devastating mudslide in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze. The disaster toppled a tunnel bridge and destroyed homes in Ridi Village, a serene community nestled in a valley at an altitude of 1,300 meters.
One of the most severe impacts was the collapse of a bridge, causing four vehicles with 11 people to plunge into the waters below. Rescue teams have confirmed three fatalities from this incident, while one person was miraculously rescued. The remaining seven passengers are still unaccounted for.
In Ridi Village itself, the catastrophe claimed seven lives, and ten residents remain missing. The village is surrounded by towering mountains reaching over 5,000 meters high, adding to the challenges faced by rescue teams.
Rescue and search efforts are in full force, with a massive mobilization of 1,698 rescuers and over 400 pieces of equipment, including helicopters, drones, excavators, and communication vehicles. These heroes are working tirelessly to find survivors and bring aid to those affected.
Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this tragedy. 💔 Let's hope for more miracles as rescue teams continue their critical work.
