Heavy rains are pounding the Chinese mainland 🇨🇳, causing dike breaches and flooding streets, forcing many to evacuate their homes.
In the past two days, three dike breaches occurred along sections of the Juanshui River in Xiangtan County, Hunan Province. 💦 One of them was successfully sealed on Monday afternoon, showcasing the swift response of local authorities and volunteers.
The Juanshui River flows into the Xiangjiang River, a major tributary of the iconic Yangtze River. Following Typhoon Gaemi 🌀, parts of the Juanshui River saw record-breaking floods.
In Hekou Town, a dike breach over 30 meters wide happened at 1:40 p.m. on Monday. Houses and crops were submerged 🌊. With helicopters hovering overhead 🚁, rescuers raced against time to search for and evacuate trapped residents.
\"We're speeding up our search efforts to make sure no one is left behind,\" said Huang Xi, a dedicated rescuer on the front lines.
Liu De'an, a 67-year-old resident, found himself trapped by the rapidly rising floodwaters due to limited mobility.
\"I watched as the water rose quickly, flooding the first floor of my house. I was terrified,\" he recalled. \"Thankfully, the rescuers arrived just in time and saved me.\" 🙏
