UN Launches $136 Million Appeal to Support Drought-Hit Malawi 🌍💧
Imagine waking up and finding your fields dry, crops withered, and no water in sight. That's the harsh reality for millions in Malawi right now. In response to this crisis, the United Nations and its partners have stepped up, launching a flash appeal for more than $136 million to assist those impacted by the devastating drought. 🙏
This vital fund aims to provide lifesaving assistance to 3.8 million people who are struggling due to prolonged dry spells that have damaged crops and hampered food production. Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, shared this urgent call to action, emphasizing the need for global solidarity.
Malawi, a beautiful landlocked country in southeastern Africa, declared a drought disaster in March due to prolonged dry spells. With more than a quarter of its population—an estimated 5.7 million people—expected to face food insecurity during the upcoming lean season from October through March, the situation is dire.
But it's not just Malawi. It's part of a bigger picture where six countries in southern Africa have declared a state of disaster due to drought. Since December 2023, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund has already allocated nearly $37 million to UN agencies responding to El Niño-induced drought in several countries in the region, including $2 million for Malawi.
Now is the time to come together, just like superheroes uniting to save the day! 🦸♂️🦸♀️ Every contribution counts in bringing relief to those in need. Let's spread the word and support our brothers and sisters in Malawi. Together, we can make a difference! 🌟
