Namibia’s Hunger Crisis: UN Urges Global Support as Nearly Half Face Food Insecurity

🌍 Namibia needs our help! Nearly half of its population is facing severe hunger due to a devastating drought caused by El Niño.

On Friday, Reena Ghelani, the UN assistant secretary-general and climate crisis coordinator for the El Niño/La Niña response, sounded the alarm from Windhoek after visiting the malnutrition hotspot of Omaheke. "They lost all their crops and are on the verge of losing their livestock. Aid must be scaled up immediately," she urged.

According to a recent analysis, a staggering 1.4 million Namibians—that's 48% of the country—are experiencing acute food insecurity. 😢 This number has doubled since last year, impacting all 14 regions.

The drought has caused a 53% decline in cereal production and nearly a 70% drop in dam water levels. That's huge! 🌾💧

President Nangolo Mbumba declared a national state of emergency back in May, ramping up drought relief efforts to support 340,000 households with food, water, livestock aid, and seeds. But resources are stretched thin.

"The impacts of climate change are with us for a while, so how we work with communities to prepare and respond is crucial," said Hopolang Phororo, UN resident coordinator in Namibia.

It's time for us to step up and support Namibia in this crisis. Let's spread the word and do what we can! 🤝❤️
