Heartbreaking news from Papua New Guinea! A massive landslide has buried more than 2,000 people in the Maip-Mulitaka district, authorities reported on Monday.
The disaster struck in the early hours of Friday morning, around 3 a.m., when most villagers were peacefully sleeping. Six villages were devastated as debris nearly two stories high swept over more than 150 homes.
Local residents, armed with nothing but spades, sticks, and their bare hands, are relentlessly digging through the rubble, hoping to find survivors. Only seven bodies have been recovered so far, and time is running out. ⌛
Amidst the tragedy, the community came together on Monday to hold a funeral for one of the victims. A procession of mourners followed the coffin, their cries echoing the profound grief felt throughout the region.
The challenging terrain and difficulties in transporting aid are hampering rescue efforts. The true extent of the catastrophe remains uncertain due to the remoteness of the area and outdated census data. Some reports suggest over 670 people may be affected, but local authorities fear the number is much higher.
Our thoughts are with the people of Papua New Guinea during this devastating time. 🙏 Let's spread the word and keep them in our hearts.
