A devastating landslide hit the village of Kaokalam in northern Papua New Guinea early Friday morning, impacting over 4,000 people, according to humanitarian group CARE Australia. The disaster struck around 3 a.m., flattening homes and leaving the community in shock. Hundreds are feared dead as the landslide leveled Kaokalam village in Enga Province, which is about 600 kilometers northwest of the capital, Port Moresby. Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade reported that more than six villages were affected in the Maip Mulitaka region. Local media suggests that over 300 people may have been buried and more than 1,100 houses destroyed. \"This area was a place of refuge for those displaced by conflicts in nearby areas,\" a spokesperson from CARE Australia said, highlighting that the number of those affected might be even higher. Rescue efforts are being hampered by debris up to 8 meters deep spread across 200 square kilometers. Road access is cut off, making it tough for relief teams to reach those in need. Helicopters are currently the only way to get to the disaster zone. \"More homes could be at risk if the landslide continues down the mountain,\" CARE warned. The concern is real, and the community is bracing for the worst. Prime Minister James Marape stated that disaster officials, the Defence Force, and the Department of Works and Highways are all assisting with relief and recovery efforts. In heartbreaking footage shared on social media by villager Ninga Role, people can be seen climbing over rubble, uprooted trees, and mounds of dirt in desperate searches for survivors. The sounds of women weeping fill the background, capturing the profound tragedy that has befallen the community. This disaster comes after a period of unrest in Enga Province. In February, at least 26 men were killed in an ambush amid tribal violence, prompting the Prime Minister to give arrest powers to the country's military. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Papua New Guinea during this difficult time. 💔
