Brazil Plans ‘Tent Cities’ as Floods Displace Thousands

Imagine waking up to find your entire neighborhood underwater. 🌊 That's the reality for thousands in Brazil's southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul.

Since late April, torrential rains have unleashed record-breaking floods, claiming at least 151 lives and leaving over 100 people missing, according to state officials.

With more than half a million people forced to flee their homes, the state government is stepping up to build at least four \"tent cities\" 🏕️ to shelter around 8,000 people currently in improvised shelters.

Over 77,000 residents are huddled in public shelters, unsure of when—or if—they can return home. Scientists warn it might take a month or more for the floodwaters to recede, and for many, there's sadly nothing left to return to.

This catastrophic event highlights the urgent need to address climate change and improve infrastructure to withstand extreme weather. 🌧️ It's not just about rebuilding homes; it's about rebuilding lives.

Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by these devastating floods. Here's hoping for safer, sunnier days ahead for Brazil. ☀️🇧🇷
