UN Appoints Astrid Schomaker as New Biodiversity Chief

🌿 Big news for nature lovers! The UN has just appointed Astrid Schomaker from Germany as the new Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). 🎉

Schomaker is stepping up to lead the charge in turning the ambitious Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework—aka the Biodiversity Plan—into real-world action! Adopted in December 2022, this plan is all about protecting our planet's rich biodiversity. 🌎💚

The Biodiversity Plan focuses on four epic goals:

  • Protect and restore nature 🌳
  • Prosper with nature 🌱
  • Share benefits fairly 🤝
  • Invest and collaborate 💰

These goals will guide Schomaker as she works to make a difference for our planet. 🌟

Mark your calendars! 🗓️ The 16th Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP 16) is happening from October 21 to November 1, 2024, in Cali, Colombia. By then, countries are expected to roll out their updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, all aligned with the Biodiversity Plan. 🗺️

Before COP 16, nations are hustling to close the biodiversity finance gap. The first big milestone? Raising at least $20 billion USD per year from developed countries by 2025 to support biodiversity efforts. 💸 The clock is ticking towards 2030, and more funds are needed to hit the Biodiversity Plan's targets, including contributions to the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund. ⏰

David Cooper, who has been the acting executive secretary since February 2023, will continue in his role until Schomaker takes the helm. 🙌

Quick throwback: The CBD was opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro back in 1992 and came into force in 1993. With 196 Parties on board, it's a near-universal agreement to protect our planet's incredible biodiversity. 🌐🌿
