Ulungur Lake Ice Fishing Spectacle Ushers in 18th Fuhai Festival

On the Chinese mainland's northwest, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, lies Ulungur Lake—known locally as Fuhai, “the Lake of Blessings”. Each winter, this frozen wonderland turns into the stage for an epic ice fishing festival that brings centuries-old tradition to life. 🎣

Meet Zhang Haijiang, a second-generation fisherman who literally grew up on these icy waters. As a teen, he followed his father onto the lake’s frozen surface. Today, he’s the lead fisherman, or Yubatou, guiding his crew with the swagger of their favorite team captain. 🧊🏆

In January 2025, the Fuhai Winter Fishing Festival celebrated its 18th edition. As the clock struck early afternoon, the first fish burst through the ice, and the crowd erupted in cheers—think Coachella energy, but with ice picks and frosty air! ❄️

Beyond the thrill, this festival is a heartfelt promise: a wish for Ulungur Lake’s bounty to thrive and for the community’s joy to endure. It’s proof that even in the chilliest moments, shared history and hope can light up the coldest days. ✨
