Chinese Mainland Launches Digital IDs for NEV Battery Recycling

On Friday, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and five other mainland departments unveiled interim measures to boost recycling and comprehensive utilization of used new energy vehicle (NEV) power batteries across the Chinese mainland.

From April 1, 2026, each NEV power battery will receive a unique digital ID that tracks its journey from production to retirement. This "full-channel, full-chain, full-lifecycle" framework includes a national NEV battery traceability platform and a digital ID management system aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency. 🔍🔋

The push comes as NEV sales in the mainland have exploded: in 2025, production and sales both topped 16 million units, accounting for over half of all new vehicles sold domestically. With earlier batteries reaching end-of-life and capacity waning, retired battery volumes are set to surge — experts predict over 1 million tonnes of used batteries by 2030.

Since June 2025, the mainland kicked off a three-year drive targeting illegal dumping and unsafe disposal of solid waste, covering scrapped vehicles, e-waste, retired new energy equipment, and spent batteries. The new digital ID system promises to crack down on improper disposal and feed more materials back into the green economy. 🌱

As the world embraces cleaner mobility, this move shows how tech and policy can team up to power a sustainable future. Stay tuned for more updates on Asia’s green revolution! ✨
