Wang Yi Visits Sri Lanka to Deepen Strategic Partnership

Today in Colombo, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, marking the start of a fresh push to deepen strategic ties between the two nations. 🌏🤝

During their meeting on Monday, January 12, 2026, Wang Yi highlighted China’s commitment to building a 'China-Sri Lanka community with a shared future.' He said Beijing is eager to exchange governance experiences and boost practical cooperation across infrastructure, maritime affairs, tourism, and cultural exchanges, all while promoting people-to-people friendships.

Wang stressed that China will stand firm in protecting the rights of developing nations, uphold the UN Charter and international law, and collaborate with like-minded partners to resist power bullying and defend multilateralism and international justice. He called on both sides to enhance regional collaboration in South Asia and work towards a fairer global governance system.

Herath responded that Sri Lanka sees China as its most reliable strategic partner. He voiced a strong desire for sustained high-level exchanges and deeper cooperation in key areas like infrastructure, maritime affairs, tourism, and cultural programs to elevate the China-Sri Lanka partnership to new heights. He also reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s adherence to the one-China principle and stressed the importance of joint communication in multilateral forums to safeguard the rights of developing countries.
